COPPER PIPE TO IRON PIPE CONVERSION

Because the outside diameters (OD) of small copper pipes are so similar in size to the OD's of small iron pipe sizes, the fiberglass pipe insulation manufacturers only make the iron pipe sizes and use substitute sizes for the copper pipes. The reason for this is so they do not have to produce two nearly identical size products.

Certain copper pipe sizes are not close to any iron pipe sizes so they have their own copper pipe insulation size (1/2" Copper, 2" Copper and above).

For example: 1/2" Copper pipes have their own pipe size 5/8". But 3/4" Copper (0.92") is very similar in OD to the 1/2" iron pipe size (0.84") so they would both use 1/2" IPS pipe insulation.

To use this chart below, simply pick out your size copper pipe and you will order the IPS size in blue to the right of it.

Example: If you have a 1" Copper pipe, you would order 3/4 x 1/2 (1/2" thickness), 3/4 x 1 (1" thickness), etc.
